If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen the numerous stories or posts about my Matcha mornings. The reason I choose Matcha over espresso or coffee a majority of the time is because I find that the latter makes me feel light-headed and anxious. Having been through a period of time where anxiety consumed me, I try to steer clear of sensations that remind me of anxiety symptoms that used to be so prevalent in my life. I am still careful about caffeine and energy-boosters, but when I consume them in moderation, I find myself feeling naturally alert and happy.

As for Matcha, it's the highest-quality green tea powder available. It’s been a tradition of the Japanese culture for centuries, yet today we see it being used most in steamed, juiced or iced beverages. It is high in antioxidants, which protect the body from free-radical damage and help with anti-aging and immunity. Matcha is also loaded with catechins, which are specific antioxidants that aid in cancer-fighting properties and overall cell-function.

Matcha also brings a slow, steady awakening and focus. It gives you a relaxed state of alertness. This feeling is produced by the amino acid L-Theanine contained in the green-tea leaves, which promotes the production of alpha waves in the brain—inducing relaxation without drowsiness. L-Theanine also helps enhance mood, improve memory and promote concentration. Additionally, Matcha contains vitamins and minerals that aid in metabolic function, skin health and detoxification.

This being said, when I reach for Matcha in the morning or early afternoon, I feel good doing so because of the mentioned benefits above. It's also really pretty, and it makes a bomb-ass looking latte or smoothie.

This morning, a cold Coconut Vanilla Matcha Smoothie sounded like the perfect way to start my day; my breakfast and energy boost in one! I enjoyed my Matcha outside on the front porch before a CorePower Yoga sculpt class. Thank goodness it gave me the protein and energy boost that I was going to need... I sweat through my entire outfit during the hour-long class and left completely exhausted. THAT is the result of a kick-ass workout in my opinion. Thanks CorePower KC!

Coconut Vanilla Matcha Smoothie
1 teaspoon Matcha powder(ceremonial or premium grade)
1/2 scoop paleo-friendly vanilla protein powder
1 Tbs unrefined coconut butter
1 frozen organic banana
1 cup organic almond milk (vanilla or plain)
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup organic raw spinach
Optional: 1/4 cup cashew or coconut yogurt (I love the brand Forager)

Toppings: Living Intentions Superfood Cereal, coconut butter, nuts, seeds, berries

Depending on how your smoothie blends, you may need more almond milk. I like my smoothies #thick, so I tend to use less liquid in them. However: your smoothie, your move. Play around with it and make the recipe your own!
