Favorite KC Clean Eats

Favorite KC Clean Eats

Unless you live in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Denver or another endless-options, health-oriented environment, it can be really hard to find eateries that serve healthy options that leave you and your gut feeling great. When I say 'healthy options', here's what I mean:

It is not required that every single meal on the menu at a restaurant follow these dietary guidelines, but to be considered a "clean eatery," in my eyes, the restaurant must have dishes that embrace at least two or three of the following in their menu.

  • Dairy-free
  • Grain-free
  • Gluten-free
  • Pasture-Raised, Grass-fed & Grass-finished meats
  • Wild-caught fish
  • Local, organic produce
  • Vegan
  • Vegetarian

Wherever I go, I try to seek out the healthiest options, or places where I can get a meal or snack that follows some of the above guidelines. I look for restaurants that serve local and organic produce, or that value local farmer's and advocate on their behalf. I seek out places with salads and vegetable dishes on their menu containing dark greens, healthy fats (like avocado and coconut), seasonal vegetables, seeds and clean dressings (without dairy and sugar).

Whether in Kansas City or while I'm traveling, I'm always on the hunt for clean eats and healthy places! It's fun for me and it gives me the opportunity to explore and advocate for companies that truly value the well-being of their customers. For those of you who are living in Kansas City or are traveling here in the future, here is the rundown of my favorite healthy options in the city!

Cafe Gratitude
333 Southwest Blvd
Kansas City, MO 64108

Cafe Gratitude is almost a vegan eatery, but honey is included on the menu. The restaurant offers 100% organic plant-based options and they support local farmers! In fact, near the kitchen you can see an advertisement for Be Love Too Farm's sprouts, which are my go-to at the Brookside Farmer's Market. Cafe Gratitude is where I go for a warm tonic and an unbeatable salad bowl; my favorites being the Luminous and Pure. I typically leave with one of their grain-free, dairy-free desserts as well. They use nuts for a lot of their items, including their salad dressings and desserts. Many of the sauces are also nut based, so they recommend not dining with them if you have a nut allergy or do not digest nuts well.

Enjoy Pure Food + Drink
10573 Mission Road
Leawood, KS 66206

My friend introduced me to Enjoy when we first started working together. It quickly became a favorite of mine for bulletproof coffee, organic made-in-house juices, and salads with local vegetables and light dressings. Enjoy's founder is really passionate about providing busy people with organic, pure, clean food. There is even a list of every single organic ingredient that the restaurant uses hanging in the main area. It's a casual space and you can always easily grab something to go during the lunch hour. My favorite salad is The Farmer's Market, but I nix the Manchego cheese! I also love Nourished, but I nix the goat cheese and grain croutons. It's easy to modify your entree at Enjoy because they are in tune to meeting their customers' needs.

813 W. 17th Street
Kansas City, MO 64108

This place is located in the Westside District of Kansas City, which is a really cool area if you're looking for some small shops and coffee spots to explore. The restaurant is strictly vegan and organically sourced, and they care deeply about meeting their customers' dietary needs (whether you're grain-free, soy-free, dairy-free, etc). The walls are colorful and the place has a hippy-like spirit about it. I'm a huge fan and my favorite dish is the Rainbow Salad, but the Life Blood and Kale Citrus are also incredible. Be prepared for quite the food presentation when your dish comes out from the kitchen!

Simple Science Juices
Overland Park Location
8126 Floyd Street
Overland Park, KS 66208

Brookside Location
112 West 63rd Street
Kansas City, MO 64113

Crossroads Location
1914 Main Street
Kansas City, MO 64108

This place is taking over KC and it's awesome! They offer cold-pressed juices and paleo-friendly foods, like protein balls, salads and plant-based snacks. They also have Kombucha on tap! A few of my favorite juices or milks include their Matcha, ISO juice for digestive support and Enzyme juice for nutrient absorption. Overall, this company has a great vibe.

634 East 63rd Street
Kansas City, MO 64110

Bury me here. The homemade lattes: Turmeric, Matcha, Chai. The salads: Avocado Hemp Seed and Pad Thai. The protein bars: Original and Rose. Sit me under any hanging plant, serve me anything from the kitchen; I'll be content and it will serve my body well.

Evolve Paleo
322 Southwest Blvd. Suite 100
Kansas City, MO 64108

I just recently became familiar with this place when they opened a location in the Crossroads District! Evolve is passionate about providing paleo meals and snacks with only the best ingredients from local farmers and producers. They even grow their own sprouts in store! They are also delivery-based, so menu items are available at your doorstep. I'm in love with their grain-free and refined-sugar-free granolas.

The Farmhouse
300 Delaware Street
Kansas City, MO 64105

THIS is an awesome date-night spot. Strung-up lights over a great patio, quiet and romantic low-lit environment, a menu that can appeal to a variety of people, and still affordable. The Farmhouse's menu is probably exactly what you envision: seasonally crafted dishes with local, clean ingredients. They support local farmer's to the max. Last time I was there, I ordered grilled cauliflower atop greens and other seasonal veggies. Still hoping to join them for Sunday brunch!

The Westside Local
1663 Summit Street
Kansas City, MO 64108

Westside Local is located in the same neighborhood as FüD. It's tucked into a small strip of antique and handmade-goods shops, and it's also another perfect date-night spot. The patio has large rustic picnic tables and an outdoor-garden feel. The food is produced locally and farm-to-table. Of course, I love their salads, but they have awesome selections under any part of the menu, and their cocktail/wine list is on fleek. Westside Local brings a homey vibe and creative menu together to provide a true KC food experience.

633 East 63rd Street
Kansas City, MO 64110

I just recently discovered this place! Canihaveabite is rooted in the idea that food can heal, replenish, nourish and strengthen. They prepare dishes of all kinds, but mainly vegan, vegetarian, and paleo options. The menu changes often in order to incorporate seasonal, fresh foods. It's a feel-good cafe and they sell Kombucha too!

As I explore Kansas City more and get more involved with the health and wellness community, I discover that living well doesn't have to be influenced by where you are located geographically! There are healthy options wherever you go, you just have to be on the lookout for them. Kansas City's wellness culture is starting to boom and it's so thrilling for me to get to visit new local spots and be a part of some of the small company launches that are happening. This city has so much to offer and I hope that you all enjoy exploring the health scene here as much as I do!

Am I missing out on amazingness? Do you have a favorite clean-eats spot in KC that I didn't mention?
