Reiki 101: My Session with Lauren Chavez
I had heard about Reiki energy work once before through Mind Body Green – a platform for all things inspiring – mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and environmentally. So, I wasn’t incredibly informed on the practice when Reiki Master Lauren Chavez reached out to me over Instagram and asked if I would be open to attending a Reiki session with her.
Lauren is a Reiki Master Teacher, Holistic Health and Wellness Coach, and Podcast Host of Badass B in a Pod. She’s passionate about helping others live the life that they imagine – to help heal, motivate and support others on their wellness journey. It wasn’t hard to recognize this in Lauren as soon as we met in person. She’s bright, centered, intelligent and intuitive.
She began her Reiki healing journey because of debilitating PTSD and anxiety. Her journey had previously included medications that only seemed to mask the symptoms, not getting to the root of the problem. With Reiki, changing her diet, meditation, yoga, massage and more, Lauren was able to fill her ‘wellness toolbox’ with healing practices that strengthened and nourished her spiritual being.
What is Reiki?
“Reiki works directly with the energy centers, or chakras, of the body,” Lauren informed me. “We usually go in for energy work when we feel we are needing a ‘tune up’, (low energy, emotional imbalance, compromised immune system, etc.) This is usually due to one or more of the chakras being out of balance.”
How does it work?
When you are receiving a Reiki session, the practitioner is lightly placing their hands directly on – sometimes hovering above – the energy centers (Root (1), Sacral (2), Solar Plexus (3), Heart (4), Throat (5), Third Eye (6), and Crown (7)). The practitioner is feeling for whether the chakra is overactive, underactive or blocked. This is felt via sensations: heat, coolness, tingling, etc. It is important to note that what one person experiences during a treatment will vary from another.
To someone who has never heard of Reiki, or is unfamiliar, Lauren likes to say “Let me show you!” And “show me” she did when I went to meet her downtown at the space where she practices. Eager and somewhat nervous, I knew that I would enjoy the spiritual experience of Reiki regardless of what I learned, and I was excited to see what Lauren found within my spiritual energy and chakras.
My Experience with Reiki
I’m choosing to share my experience in this blog because I want to be open about what my Reiki session was like and what I learned from it. My hope is that you learn from this post and take the opportunity to either contact Lauren or another Reiki Master for a session, and that you gain a deeper understanding of your spiritual balance by doing so.
I met Lauren at The Grand Hall in Power & Light, and the spa area where she works was incredibly clean and inviting. There was a space for meditation, massage therapy and Reiki work, health coaching, etc. Just like a massage, Lauren and I had a private room and before anything we sat down to talk and get to know each other a little bit. She asked me how I was feeling, if there was any reason in particular that I was interested in trying Reiki that day, etc.
I told Lauren about my struggle with anxiety and how much I enjoy learning about mental health and pursuing practices that help me feel good both mentally and physically. I told her about my interest in spiritual growth, recipe development, my blog, etc. I also admitted that I felt a little anxious sitting in the room with her and trying Reiki without knowing entirely what it was and what came from it.
Although Lauren was able to sense on her own that I was feeling somewhat uneasy, she was so receptive and calm that it eased my anxiety. She understood my story and was able to connect with me on a certain level because she had experienced anxiety herself in the past and had found healing through holistic practices.
After we talked, I laid on a massage table like I would if I was receiving a massage and Lauren put on meditation-type music while she worked. The entire experience consisted of her using her hands to work directly with my chakras and feel for any energy imbalances or vibrations. It was a 20-minute session of both front and back-of-body energy work.
When Lauren was finished with her work, she stepped out and gave me a minute to gather myself. I had trouble getting up from the table because I was so incredibly relaxed. It wasn't the kind of 'relaxed' that you feel after a massage; it was more of an internal relaxation, a rise in my vibrations.
When Lauren came back in, we chatted about the session and she summarized some of what she gathered while working with my chakra energies. Here is what I learned about my chakra imbalances:
· My 3rd chakra, the solar plexus, yellow, my power center, is slightly out of balance, which can cause a person to feel anxious, emotional or lack self-confidence.
· My 5th chakra, the throat, blue, my ability to speak my truth, was also out of balance, which meant that I might not be showing up authentically, may experience sore throats often and might feel like I’m not showing up fully as who I came here to be.
· My 6th chakra, the third eye, purple, my intuition, when out of balance is preventing me from listening to the signs within myself and around me – which most likely leaves me second-guessing myself often.
· My 7th chakra, the crown, indigo & clear, my connection to my higher self, the community and a higher power, is out of balance and this might mean that I’m feeling isolated often, or maybe as though I’m “outside of the world looking in.”
Lauren encouraged me to fully step into what I came here to do, and to do so with gusto. If I’m experiencing anxiety when entering new situations or places, it could be due to the fact that the unknown can be scary and my instinct to worry about what others think of me takes over. She suggested that I start incorporating more meditation, journaling, yin & hatha-style yoga, and self-affirmations into my life. She also suggested that I get out there and “do something that makes you really uncomfortable” – to turn fear into curiosity.
Did I believe a majority of this? Did I think that she was spot on? I would say 97% yes.
Lauren’s Reiki work must be special, because I’ve never met someone with such a heightened intuition. She was not only cleansing and balancing my chakras, but she was giving me intuitive guidance that was specific to things going on in my life. Also, it was so nice to spend time with someone that genuinely listened to me.
Dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, tough relationships, spiritual mess or doubt can be extremely hard on the mind and body. For those that could use a spiritual cleansing or internal reset – I think you should reach out to Lauren. I felt incredibly relaxed after my Reiki session with her and truly left feeling peaceful and more in tune with myself. Was it a life changing experience? Maybe not, but I have come to believe that it’s practices like this that guide us in important directions and help us identify key pieces of our life that need attention. And for that, I am grateful.
